With the upcoming Premier League 7 so close we can almost taste it we figured we should take a trip down poker memory lane. Revisiting some of the most infamous poker hands ever to be played out between some of the biggest names in poker in recent history. Here are our Top 10 partypoker Premier League hands ever….
Hellmuth vs Dwan: Heat 2 – Premier League III
On the very first hand of this heat in the Premier League III Tom Dwan flops the stone cold nuts and checks it three times to Phil Hellmuth who bets every street. When Dwan check-raises all-in on the river can Hellmuth, who’s turned a flush, get away from it?
Luke Schwartz vs David Benyamine: Heat 6 Premier League IV
This was Luke Schwartz at his best and his worst, or should we say brashest. He makes a good read on David Benyamine and forces the Frenchman to fold his hand after he’d made a big bet on the turn. “In your eye David Benyamine, you just got so pwnd,” he spouts as he puffs out his chest. But Benyamine would have the last laugh as he’d beat Schwartz heads-up for the title in the final.
JC Tran bluffs Phil Hellmuth: Heat 2 Premier League IV
Phil Hellmuth was going after JC Tran all heat and Tran got his own back in this pot, running a big bluff on Hellmuth that just about got through. “Oh my JC,” said Jesse May in the commentary box when Tran made his move. “Now I’m really on tilt,” said the Poker Brat as Tran showed him the bluff.
Luke Schwartz five-bets all-in with six high: Heat 1 Premier League IV
Vanessa Rousso started the hand by limping with six high, Luke Schwartz ended it by shoving with six high. In-between what happened was a case of who blinks first between Yevginy Timoshenko and Luke Schwartz. “Are you serious?” said Phil Hellmuth in the commentary box. Just wow doesn’t do it justice. (starts 17 minutes 30 seconds in)
Tom Dwan makes JC Tran lay down the third nuts: Heat 7 Premier League III
Was this the best bluff ever or the worst laydown? You decide. On a 9h-Ad-Jc-Jh-Jd board Dwan holds Qc-10s, whilst Tran has As-10d. With just 50,000 in the pot Dwan sets Tran all-in for 100,000. “I don’t mind Tom’s play, he’s betting twice the pot and JC needs to right a high percentage of the pot,” says Annette Obrestad from the commentary booth. Could you lay it down? THIS IS A GOOD ONE FOR A SET-UP DANY!!
Duhamel owns Esfandiari: Heat 3 Premier League VI
With a 6h-3s-Jd-Ks-9s board on the felt Antonio Esfandiari fires a third bullet with just ace high – Ad-5s to be exact. An out of position Jonathan Duhamel contemplates his action with Ah-10d for a better ace high. “If Jonathan calls this I don’t want to play poker against him anymore,” says Phil Laak. The Unabomber’s head explodes when Duhamel shoves! “One of the greatest plays ever,” was how Jesse May described it.
Negreanu’s chips go everywhere: Heat 7 Premier League VI
Whilst Daniel Negreanu is well versed in getting into spats of the table his on table demeanour’s default setting is personable, chatty and smiley. So that’s what makes this physical outburst in his final heat all the more explosive.
Tom Dwan puts his Premier League on the line: Final heat Premier League V
Due to the unique points scoring system in The Premier League the final heats of the Premier League can throw up some unique situations. One of the best occurred in the Premier League V when Tom Dwan took a huge risk against Vanessa Selbst. (starts 26 minutes 15 seconds in)
Tony G blows up: Heat 6 Premier League IV
What would the Premier League be without Tony G? He’s the only ever present across every series of The Premier League is Tony G. First let’s look at the bad, his nadir was in the Premier League IV when he seemingly couldn’t win a hand. It reached its climax during the final heat and this sequence of hands.
Tony G shows his heart and commitment to the game: Heat Premier League III
Say what you like about Tony G but he’s never been afraid to put his money where his mouth is. And that’s exactly what he did when he made this gutsy play against Tom Dwan.
Despite having won a record 13 World Series of Poker bracelets, including Main Event titles, and almost $ 18 million from live poker tournaments, Phil Hellmuth is best known for his rants and blow-ups at the table.
The self-proclaimed “Poker Brat,” has such a high opinion of himself that he once said that if it wasn’t for the luck element in poker he would win every tournament he entered. As Hellmuth is so highly strung and has such a high opinion of himself – and a low opinion of his opponent’s skill level – when he loses a key pot he is prone to explode into a barrage of F-bombs and other expletives. Here we take a look at six of the best Hellmuth blow-ups of all time.
Hellmuth Blows Up on Poker After Dark
This clip is classic Hellmuth. He starts the hand in front but then commits his stack when he is way behind, yet still managed to blame David “Viffer” Peat for his mistake. Notice how Antonio Esfandiari finds Hellmuths rants hilarious!
“This Guy Can’t Even Spell Poker!”
This next clip is one of Hellmuth’s most famous outbursts. Alongside his infamous “I dodge bullets, baby” outcry when he folded a strong hand only to be shown pocket aces by his opponent, this little Hellmuth gem has been used over and over again by members of the poker community. Apologies for the poor video quality.
Howard Lederer Sucks Out on Hellmuth
If you watch this clip you can see the volcano in Hellmuth start to slowly erupt as he loses and busts out of the tournament. On the outside he seems calm and collected as he shakes the hands of his former opponents, but we know something dark is brewing inside. As he walks away he can’t help himself and another Hellmuth rant is born.
Hellmuth Unhappy With Negreanu’s Play
Despite getting his money in badly preflop, on the flop, on the turn and then on the river, Hellmuth seems to think that Daniel Negreanu was the one who misplayed his hand and cost him the $ 165,700 pot. Well played Hellmuth, well played.
Hellmuth versus Dwan Heads-Up
The Hellmuth versus Tom Dwan match at the NBC National Heads Up Poker championships was one of the most eagerly anticipated matches of all the brackets, mainly because the poker community wanted to see Dwan bamboozle Hellmuth with his vastly superior heads-up skills.
The pair get it all in preflop early in the match, Hellmuth with pocket aces against the tens of Dwan and when Dwan spikes a third ten on the turn Hellmuth is not impressed and gives Dwan a lecture on how to play poker!
“The worst player in history!”
If you do not play exactly how Hellmuth thinks you should then you are setting yourself up for trouble. When Cristian Dragmomir called Hellmuth’s three-bet with ten-four, won a pot and then showed his meagre holding, Hellmuth erupted into what is a classic and legendary Hellmuth rant!
Let us know what your favourite Hellmuth rants – or any other player for that matter – in the comments box.
Classic YouTube Best Poker Clips – More WSOP Golden Moments with Phil Hellmuth, Greg Merson and Filippo Candio Caught in a Major Blow Up!
We’re back with more Classical YouTube Best Poker Clips and this week’s round-up features one of the most famous hands in history at least for Phil Hellmuth that is, one of the end of the longest Heads Up ever in WSOP Main Event History and one of the funniest and emotional outbursts in poker ever!
1 – It’s the 1989 World Poker Series Final Table and Phil is up against Johnny Chan. The Orient Express Chan goes all in holding Ace Seven and Phil goes in with a pair of nines, now watch history unfold:
2 – Here we see the end game of Greg Merson and Jesse Sylvia at 2012 World Series of Poker.
3 – Question for you all, how do you say “Blow Up” in Italian!?” Watch and learn, watch and learn:
Missed last weeks one with Scotty Nguyen, Sam Farha and Matt Damon don’t worry it’s right here!
This week’s round-up features one truly OMG sick sick bluff from the master of bluffs Mr Scotty Nguyen, one crazy ‘can you be serious!’ All-In featuring Mr Cool Sam Farha and according to the ESPN guys some bad bad acting from the upcoming ‘The Monuments Men’ Hollywood star Matt Damon.
1 – Scotty Nguyen goes up against Humberto Brenes and proceeds to quite possibly pull off one of the sickest bluffs in poker history? Maybe not the sickest but it’s up there for sure.
2 – Sam Farha and actor Oliver Hudson (son of Kate Hudson) gets it in bad, ohh bad, oh so so bad…going All-In on their very first hand of the WSOP. Ok just so you know someone is going home $ 10,000 the lighter after this hand so who’s it going to be?
3 – Talking about horrible acting check this one out with Matt Damon in the 2009 WSOP Ante Up For Africa as he “creatively calls” with BFF Ben Affleck watching on, Highlights from Damon include – ‘The Jolt’ (No one noticed Matt honestly…) at 0:48 and the ‘Ohh gosh, darn it, I just dunno…this one’s a tough call’ move at 1:19. Still who didn’t watch Rounders and think….
Side-note and mini-brag: I was actually on the sidelines reporting on that event. Damon of course leaned over the rail and asked me for some tips and to grab a photo with me. However unfortunately at the last second Shane Warne (who’s famous for barging his way into our work) bowled his way into the shot as the Melbourne Herald Sun needed something for their morning edition. So if you can find it I maybe in there looking like this:
The first week of 2013 went by in the blink of an eye! I think that has something to do with the best Christmas gift I received this year – a Kindle. I’ve always been a big reader and have been known to fall completely off the grid for weeks at a time, immersed in dozens of novels. I’m always curious to know what other people are reading so if there’s a book you really love, note it down in the comments for me please!
I haven’t JUST been sitting on my sofa reading though. I’ve also been sitting on friend’s sofas and reading. Last week, I headed to England for a quick trip to renew my passport. I was flipping through my old passport, looking at the different stamps and reminiscing about the incredible places that I’ve been able to go in the past 10 years. Out of all of the different countries, I think my absolute favourite was Thailand. I spent a fair amount of time there about 5 years ago and bringing back those memories has me all pumped to visit again. How about a WPT Koh Samuii? It’s a brilliant idea, lets get someone on that!
In the meantime, I’ll be downloading a travel book on Thailand and dreaming ~ Kara Scott
The holiday season is nearly upon us, so it’s time to think nostalgically about Christmases past and celebrate the special family things we repeat every year. This might mean helping the children find a carrot for Rudolph, or watching Grandad drink sherry until he slurs. We all know those special family times.
PokerStars is the biggest poker site in the world, but players throughout the world share common experiences, and in some ways it makes us one big (…very, very big) family. So as we wallow in festive nostalgia, I will raise a glass to my PokerStars friends and family everywhere, and share with you some of my favourite PokerStars traditions.
PCA satellites in December
It might be chilly outside, but it’s never cold when you’re logged into PokerStars Events lobby. In deep midwinter we can all dream of January sun. Check out details of PokerStars Women’s satellites here or read about your last chance to qualify for the PCA main event here.
MicroMillions winners turning loose change into big cash
Another tradition I like is the happy-ever-after poker fairytale of the little player winning big. Like SoyDelGlobo who turned a $ 22 buy-in into $ 157,218.68 by winning the MicroMillions II Main Event. That’s a 714,531% ROI!
This leads to…
The success behind the User ID
Like axel397, Ned_bg, ADP1985… Yeah, who? They’ve won loads more than I can ever dream of, so I’m sure they didn’t just let the cat walk on the keyboard when they chose a name.
I like it when I read PokerStars Blog and suddenly some random user name takes on a human face. We learn what they do for a living, how they’ll spend the cash, maybe even why they chose a name like guxcg6ryerikti9. (Okay, I did let my cat make that one up.)
My special favourites are when a woman steps from behind an anonymous nickname. Like sexylady409 who won the Sunday Million last month. Who’d have guessed she was a lady with that double bluff of a name?
The Sunday Majors
They’re as regular as a turn card after a flop, or a re-raise every time I bluff… They’re a constant, always there, with happy winners claiming loads of cash every week. It’s just like someone finds Christmas every Sunday.
In fact I don’t call it Sunday, I call it PokerStarsday.
Team Pro winning things
Vanessa Selbst wins everything, Martin Horecki is MicroMillions player of the series again…. yawn.
I love seeing good players proving their skills, but I wonder if Jason Mercier ever gets up and thinks, ‘Hmm, maybe I should try something different today?’ Like lose.
It’s inspiring to see skill rewarded. It makes me want to keep keep improving, I might never get to the top, but I’m encouraged to play the best I can.
The Mega Milestone
Like hand 90,000,000,000… (is that enough zeroes yet?) landing on a $ 0.01/0.02 table and Somebodski from Russia claiming enough cash to buy a new car. It’s like PokerStars having a hand history birthday party and giving random guests the presents.
Santa’s Christmas PokerStars visit
This is the PokerStars tradition I like most of all. It’s a little known fact that Santa Claus stops by the PokerStars tables every year, here’s what happened last year.
We suspect the jolly bearded man might be visiting again very soon, so…
You’d better watch out,
You’d better not cry (even when aces get cracked…)
You’d better not pout,
I’m telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to PokerStars..!
You probably have a favourite PokerStars tradition too, let us know by contacting PokerStars Women on Facebook or Twitter.
Have a lovely festive season, and don’t eat too much Christmas cake or you’ll spend Boxing Day hoovering crumbs out of your laptop fan.
Here at PartyPoker there’s one thing we all love, yep you guessed it a good poker face, I mean who doesn’t? It’s really one part of the game that you truly need to master when playing live.
Now that doesn’t mean what you’re about to see is a collection of poker face stoic, emotionless, like stone faces, no far from it, some are wacky, others are crazy one is dam right scary. Here from a recent trip to the WPT Copenhagen we present “Best Poker Faces” Enjoy as we sure did:
Now Show Us Yours!
Were you at the WPT Copenhagen? Can you make an awesome Poker face? Yeah right, prove it then. Just film your best poker face it and send us the link in the comments below, we’ll even add the best to this story, and remember to follow us on Twitter for even more poker greatness.
Vanessa Selbst says it best, so I will let her fill you in. The incredibly talented Team PokerStars Pro calls it “the best women’s event of the year by far.” But that’s only part of what she had to say about the PokerStars Women Live event coming up January 12-13 in the Bahamas. “It’s a great opportunity to get some live poker experience with a structure that’s much better than the structure at the WSOP. And the Atlantis is a great resort, so you can come with your family and they will have a nice vacation while you play the event.” That’s not enough to convince you? How about these final words of advice from Vanessa? “If you’re thinking about playing any women’s tournament for the first time, this would be the one to play.”
So let’s sort it out. It’s the best women’s poker event of the year, held at one of the world’s premier resorts. It’s a chance to play with pros like Vanessa Selbst, Liv Boeree, Vicky Coren, and other PokerStars Team Pros. It’s white sandy beaches, fabulous restaurants and shopping, waterslides, and more poker (and poker pros) than you can shake a stick at. It’s a chance to play and learn poker in an exclusively female tournament where you will catch up with old friends and make new ones. In short, it’s the best tournament for women available, in the best location, and you can even win your seat for free. Did you hear that last part right? Yes, you did.
Satellites start Monday, October 22 awarding at least one $ 3,250 prize package every week. The package includes your buy-in for the tournament, hotel
accommodations for three nights at the Atlantis, and money for expenses. Low buy-in and free qualifiers run daily with $ 215 Weekly Final tickets awarded. The Final is held on Sunday at 14:00 ET with at least one package guaranteed.
So now is the time to start planning that trip for January and scoring a package that will definitely give you something to look forward to in gloomy November and December. For all the details, see the dedicated PokerStars Women Live page. And for details about the entire PCA festival, see the PCA page. . To register for the satellites, go to the PokerStars lobby and click Events/PCA. See you in the Bahamas!
Dan Sauva on his Jungleman entry – ‘A bit of free love really does brings out the best in everybody’
For those of you who’ve been following our Jungleman WSOP promotion you’re probably thinking a little like I am, “Who are these people?” and “Where do they come up with this stuff?“ and “I’ll have a pint of what ever Dan Sauva is having” right? Well maybe not that last point but you get my point.
Luckily for me I’ve had the real pleasure of catching up with a few of them. All have a unique story to tell and all have a real love for the game of poker. If only we could take you all to Las Vegas for the WSOP!
Anyway Dan Sauva loves a bit of it
Today I managed to catch up with none other than Dan Sauva, whose currently enjoying his 15mins of fame with his “Free Hugs” video which is proving to be extremely popular, even TonyG thought so!
Alright Dan let’s start with the basics: age, city and a little bit about yourself?
I’m 30 years old, live in London and work in advertising. When I’m not penning punchy slogans for ad campaigns, I’m bouncing between London poker venues looking for entertainment, overlays and soft games with inebriated businessmen. How do they always get there on the river? Sigh.
What was the thinking behind your entry for Jungleman’s good deed WSOP challenge?
I was keen to do something light-hearted and fun that would make people smile. I decided to avoid the ‘tug at your heartstrings ‘ approach as I felt it might be a little insincere given the competition setting. I toyed with a few ideas and landed on free hugs. I felt this would be a good way to spread some happiness and joy on an otherwise mundane mid-week lunch-break and really capture the spirit of good deeds in an entertaining way.
I asked Emily, a good friend of mine, to jump on-board as she has bubbliness in abundance and I knew she’d get the hug-ball rolling. My mate Paul grabbed his camera and we were off. Armed with a whiteboard, marker pen, heart t-shirt, and with hugs on the brain, we set out onto the streets of Camden Town, London and nailed it. I have never seen so many happy people – a bit of free love really does brings out the best in everybody. It was great fun.
What got you in to poker?
I was invited to a home game with some friends about five years ago. After a confusing lesson from a drunken mate I was in for £20 and completely out of my depth. I remember little about the game apart from that I definitely knew how to say ‘all-in’, act out of turn, hit gutshots, fumble chips and generally annoy. I won. There’s nothing like a fortuitous bink to slingshot you into degeneracy and I’ve been on the poker rollercoaster ever since.
To be fair, I’ve studied the game fervently and have had some notable success both online and live. I’m also well versed in spanking chunks of bankroll when late night cash games spiral into the bad-beat and beer abyss.
My main strength is live tournaments and I try to play at least twice a week when I can. For me this is where the real fun and excitement of poker lies, entry to the WSOP Main Event would be crazy.
Who are some of your favorite professional poker players?
I’ve watched every poker show religiously and have spent many an evening sucked into obsessive YouTube vortexes. As a result I have a soft spot for the old guard of poker personalities. The creative aggression of Gus Hansen, the eruptive tendencies of Phil Hellmuth, the ever-effusive Daniel Negreanu and, of course, Tony G and his legendary bike to name but a few.
Which players would you be most scared to see at your table?
Hmmm, I’m not sure I’d be ‘scared’ of anybody per se, I’m a confident player with belief in my abilities. Although saying that, I wouldn’t be overjoyed with a table draw that had me pitted against the ‘genius generation’ of tournament pros. You know, players like Mercier, Grospellier, Katchalov, Cody and the like. Scrap that, I’d be petrified.
Any pros you hope to play with?
I’d like to play with Daniel ‘jungleman’ Cates himself. It may seem like an obvious answer but I genuinely respect what he’s achieved in poker and his generosity with opportunities like this WSOP Challenge. In return I’d attempt to 5-bet bluff him out of a big pot and table it proudly. Joke! I wouldn’t dare
Anything else you’d like to say?
Thanks again to PartyPoker and Jungleman for this once in a lifetime opportunity and thanks to Tony G for his support of Good Deed Hugs on Twitter. If you like the video, then why not send a vote my way. Thanks to everyone, and if the poker gods are looking down on me, see you in Vegas? One time?
Many thanks Dan, good luck it would be great seeing you playing at the WSOP!
So if you missed it here’s Dans ‘Free Hugs’ video, and remember head on over to the ‘Daniel ‘Jungleman’ Cates WSOP Main Event Challenge – So Who Would You Pick?’ page, watch all the videos, like which ones you want and tell us which ones rock in the comment box!
Ladies and gentleman I can firmly say that I have found the biggest and best cash games in the world – in Minsk. Yes, Minsk is in Belarus and it has been going very well. Last weekend I had a ma$ $ $ $ $ $ $ ive score and would like to thank those that invited me for their excellent hospitality.
I will be back, Minsk is a remarkable place and a new frontier for poker. The best PLO games are now in Minsk – reach out to me. I have found a new paradise on earth – clean, safe and secure.
Tony Betties - new band I have put together
I am now back at Tony Resort in Lithuania. Zasko, my faithful German Shepherd friend, is now fully grown and loving life more than ever. He is frolicking in the forest, running free but at the same time keeping away from the dangerous bears. He’s a lover to most things but when he is on the attack, he is on the attack – you would not want to be his enemy.
He is specially trained to be the guardian of Tony Resort and is kicking hard. He tolerates open mindedness but whatever you do don’t get his wrong side. His jaw is big and active – in fact, Zasko is very active at the moment – he is still looking for his life mate as it is time to breed.
Zasko looked on fondly when I completed the line-up for a new music band I have put together – The Tony Betties and we are going to have a concert at TonyResort soon. Check out their debut single and video – I predict their success will spread beyond Lithuania to the international market. They are all fired up and I want to be their Simon Cowell – they are going to do a big concert here at Tony Resort. They have true talent.
Jungleman leaks in online game too
For the moment I think business is going to keep me on this side of the world. I have been monitoring my twitter @tonyguoga and playing Pokerfest on PartyPoker when I can. I also encountered Jungleman on the cash tables at Party recently too – I know he is scared of me as he won’t take up my challenge. Nice lad but leaks in his live game and online game too it seems!
Lots of you ask for my sports betting tips so I am going to give you one now. I have put a sneaky bet on Ukraine at 40/1 (41) to win the Euro 2012 soccer. They are hosts and shouldn’t be underestimated – I am also positive their price will shorten before and during the tournament too. Easy money.
