Brazilians are well known to be among the happiest and hardest party animals out there. Leave a bunch of Europeans in a bar by themselves and they’ll likely drink the place dry, but do the same with Brazilians and they’ll deck the place out in green and gold, and spend the night dancing on the bar. And then drink it dry.
VIP Club Live nights are great fun. There’s loads of entertainment, games and mingling. You get to meet and hangout with some of the guys and gals you’ve been tangling with over the tables – no bad beat stories, please! – and basically have an awesome time. And all that for just a splurge of some FPPs. Not bad.
The Brazilian leg took place recently and looked like a blast, as you’d expect, and London is up next (23 November).

I have been playing poker more or less full time for the past two years or so. While my results are not stellar, I make enough to cover my bills while constantly working on improving my game. But this is not the topic of this particular article; there will be plenty of time in the future to discuss how much I actually suck in poker.
What I want to focus on is playing live poker games. Most of the people reading this article probably spend most of their time playing online, hardly finding a reason to move away from the virtual felt. I have, in fact, met some great online players who told me they just feel uncomfortable playing live. And why would you exchange the comfort of playing in your underwear to going to the casino once a week or so?
First of all, you will kill it. For the reasons above, most decent grinders do not bother to go to small local tourneys. People you will meet will have ideas about poker so wrong and outdated that you might first think someone is pulling a practical joke on you. And even those with some foundations usually mix it up with their own ideas creating a weird hybrid that results in unimaginable spews. Just by applying very basic principles of a shove fold game in the later stages you will overrun the table and leave your opponents wondering what hit them.
But they will not adjust; somehow they will put you on a monster next time you shove even if you shove three times per orbit. Not to mention blind vs. blind play, where you will be able to capture most pots uncontested, and when they have a big hand, you will know it. Trust me.
Playing live will build your confidence
Apart from the obvious boost this will bring to your bankroll, there is also a factor of confidence and renewed desire to play. Sitting in front of your screen day in and day out can become very dull and unappealing. Going out and crushing some actual souls can bring you satisfaction and boost your desire for the game more than you would ever think possible.
I know that many people are somewhat reluctant to play live because they feel that they will make too many mistakes and will not get the hang of it. I had some luck in that regard; soon after I found online poker I got the chance to play in live freerolls as well where most people were new to the game, so I was not that afraid of doing things wrong. Everyone was doing it wrong, and we learned together!
But keep in mind that when you go to the casino, you are their guest, and it is not like they are just waiting for you to make a mistake so that everyone could make fun of you. Dealers are there to keep the game in line and for the most part they will warn you about the action or if you are trying to do something wrong. And in the end, even if you do something wrong, it is not the end of the world. I have played countless live tournaments and I still skip action sometimes or make the raise too small because I did not notice the blind level changed. Laugh it off and keep grinding.
If you happen to be the type of person that is annoyed by the noise and chatter (and there will be noise and chatter when you play live, I will not lie about that), there is a solution. Bring your headphones, load your phone with your favorite music, and as soon as cards are in the air turn it up as loud as necessary to cancel any outside noise. It might make you seem like bit of a prick, but if you do not care about how these guys perceive you, you should not worry too much.
But variance is a bitch in the real world as much as it is online. That clueless guy calls your four-times-the-pot shove with a gutshot draw because he can feel it coming, and hits it on the river. It happens. You are left with no chips and nothing to do. Do not let it get to you. Cross the street, get into that pub and have a beer or two. Have a laugh, relax. One thing is certain: there is always another tourney and another donkey eagerly waiting to ship his stack to you. And when you hit the run of great cards as well, you will feel like a demigod.

Hello, it’s Kento! Today I will talk about a tournament experience. It’s a live tourney at Rendezvous Brighton played last February. It was 400 or 500 pound buy-in main event. 80-85 people were playing. Blinds started out at 25/50 with level changes every hour. This was my first overseas poker tournament, so let’s play poker!
Blinds are 100/200 with a 25 ante. I raise 525 with AKo from UTG+1. Hijack calls (he’s a player who played with Ax many times and he has only 7,000). The other players fold. Let’s see the flop.
The flop comes AK5 rainbow. It’s a very good flop! If he has AQ or AJ or something, he will probably call my bet. I’m afraid of only 55. I bet 775; he calls. I don’t feel that he has 55. It seems that he has Ax. It’s very good for me. Let’s see the turn. I hope the turn comes QJT or 5.
Turn comes 5. It’s fantastic! If he has an ace, he probably thinks it’s good for a win or tie. At the least, he doesn’t think he’s losing. This is not a flush or straight board so I could raise UTG+1 (indicating that I don’t have 5). If he has an ace, he probably hopes I don’t have 55, AA, KK, A5, K5, 65s, 54s, etc.
I think he is drawing dead, so I check on the turn. He checks back. He has checked many times before, so my guess doesn’t change, He absolutely has an ace.
The river comes 9. I move all-in. He thinks I’m bluffing or I’m trying to steal a 3000 pot with the same hand or KK, 55, or 99, but I told you he hopes I don’t have KK, 55, or 99. Some people’s hearts are weak. When I checked on the turn, he probably thought I didn’t connect so he checks back. He may think my move now is a bluff. He thinks for awhile and finally calls! I show my hand and he mucks.
That situation was very lucky. I can read his hands easily and had a good board. In such a case, I recommend you aim at all the chips of an opponent. Such a chance does not come often.
Thank you for reading.

Vanessa Selbst says it best, so I will let her fill you in. The incredibly talented Team PokerStars Pro calls it “the best women’s event of the year by far.” But that’s only part of what she had to say about the PokerStars Women Live event coming up January 12-13 in the Bahamas. “It’s a great opportunity to get some live poker experience with a structure that’s much better than the structure at the WSOP. And the Atlantis is a great resort, so you can come with your family and they will have a nice vacation while you play the event.” That’s not enough to convince you? How about these final words of advice from Vanessa? “If you’re thinking about playing any women’s tournament for the first time, this would be the one to play.”
So let’s sort it out. It’s the best women’s poker event of the year, held at one of the world’s premier resorts. It’s a chance to play with pros like Vanessa Selbst, Liv Boeree, Vicky Coren, and other PokerStars Team Pros. It’s white sandy beaches, fabulous restaurants and shopping, waterslides, and more poker (and poker pros) than you can shake a stick at. It’s a chance to play and learn poker in an exclusively female tournament where you will catch up with old friends and make new ones. In short, it’s the best tournament for women available, in the best location, and you can even win your seat for free. Did you hear that last part right? Yes, you did.
Satellites start Monday, October 22 awarding at least one $ 3,250 prize package every week. The package includes your buy-in for the tournament, hotel
accommodations for three nights at the Atlantis, and money for expenses. Low buy-in and free qualifiers run daily with $ 215 Weekly Final tickets awarded. The Final is held on Sunday at 14:00 ET with at least one package guaranteed.
So now is the time to start planning that trip for January and scoring a package that will definitely give you something to look forward to in gloomy November and December. For all the details, see the dedicated PokerStars Women Live page. And for details about the entire PCA festival, see the PCA page. . To register for the satellites, go to the PokerStars lobby and click Events/PCA. See you in the Bahamas!
If you listen closely, you’ll hear a light sipping and the dulcet British tones of James Hartigan as he has an afternoon tea and warms up his voice. Listen a little closer and you’ll hear a loud hacking and some random expletives. That’s Joe Stapleton, obviously, also warming up his voice. The odd couple is preparing itself for the first EPT Live broadcasts of the ninth season.
In less than three weeks, EPT Live will hit the air from Barcelona. On August 19th, Hartigan and Stapleton will meet again to broadcast the EPT 9 Barcelona Super High Roller, a €50,000 star-studded extravaganza.
Six days later, Hartigan and Stapleton will be on a one-hour delay for the EPT9 Barcelona main event. Why the one-hour delay? Well, this one will be a cards-up broadcast, so we can all follow along omnipresently, if you will.
If you don’t feel like listening to Hartigan and Stapleton for the main event (and shame on you for that…), the broadcast will also be simulcast in German, Italian, Spanish, and Russian.
We’ll remind you more about the broadcast as it gets closer. In the meantime, you can watch full replays of past action on the PokerStars EPT page on PokerStars.tv.

Seventeen players played the iPOPS Live Barcelona Main Event on behalf of Titan Poker. For some of them, this was the first time they had played a land-based poker tournament, while others had previously represented Titan Poker at poker tournaments in Malta, Dublin, Austria, or even in Barcelona itself.
“Barcelona is my favorite city and I’ve been here six times to play poker,” one of the players said. “The hotel was really great and the tournament schedule is perfect.”
Included here are more videos from iPOPS Live Barcelona, where our players tell about how they qualified for the event and speak about their experiences.
