Unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to spend too much time with Talal Shakerchi when he graced us with his presence at the recently recorded PartyPoker Premier League Poker Season 6 in London. However I do have to say out of all the poker players I’ve ever had the chance to meet in my lifetime this was one cool customer.

Bond vs Bourne?

Here’s a man with absolutely no self inflated ego and someone you wouldn’t pick out of crowd, which if I’m honest was probably intentional. Whilst most of us secretly probably wish to be the James Bond of Poker this truly was poker’s answer to Jason Bourne. Discreet and deadly.

To me it seemed the simple thrill of the game was his ultimate vice, the problem solving mixed with the psychology of the game was what got him going. And to that end it has to be said he played a fantastic game against the self proclaimed baddie of any poker table Tony G, I mean just watch this hand:

And so with reports coming in from a that he ‘lost’ in the region of €1 million in what’s being described as ‘Europe’s biggest cash poker game last weekend’ I wouldnt be too worried about Talal, knowing what little I do about this mastermind he’s either got the money back already is close to.

Seven hours of play later and we have a winner of the very first PartyPoker.com WPT National Vienna. The best part of course is that it’s a PartyPoker qualifier! Yep that’s right our very own Tomaz Kogovsek takes it down after crushing the field here in Vienna and that’s after getting here all via a $ 200 online satellite!

Starting to feel Like Danny Glover?

Five years is a long time in this game and Tomaz Kogovsek has of course knocked up quite a few paydays but this truly represents his biggest tournament cash yet, so a huge congratulations from us all here!

But That’s Not All Though!

On top of this he gets his buy in from PartyPoker to the WPT National Slovenia where on home ground he will attempt to make back to back WPT National final tables. And Here’s How It All Went Down

Pretty early on we saw Blaz Svara get sent packing within the first hour of play. Quickly followed up by Robert Heidorn and shortly after Shai Zurr was sent to the rail.

And so as play quietened down we moved into level 25 where chip leader Peter Kamaras looked in real danger with the shortest stack at the table however in managing to double up twice to reclaim a stack close to 700k.

with Predrag Kecojevic being eliminated in 5th place he had some to breath but not for long as he soon got eliminated in 4th place by our Slovenian winner with the showdown being Kamaras: A♥ 6♠ Tomaž: 7♦ 7♠ with the board running out 9♥ 2♣ 10♦ Q♥ J♠.

Three handed play is of course always a really tense time. And we thought we might be in for a long night this time as all players were relatively evenly stacked and just passing this chips about between them.

Level 27 saw Kogovšek going all-in for 1,825,000 covering his opponent with only 50k chips, the Czech called with a showdown of Kogovsek A♦ 9♦ vs. Taborsky’s 7♣ 7♠. The board showed 6♣ A♥ 3♣ 3♥ 2♥ favouring the Slovenian and taking us to heads up.

Down to heads up action where play was incredibly swift, after only 20 minutes play the clock was stopped with Kogovsek shoving all in with 4,900,000 chips against Muhlocker’ 895,000 preflop. Kogovsek hold A♥ 8♦ and Muhlocker A♣ K♥. The flop showed 10♦ Q♠ 8♠ and made Muhlocker sick and with the river and turn giving an A♦ and 6♥ the Slovenian took this historical WPT National Vienna title.
