Heart to Heart with Tony G and John Eames
![]()
The Christmas Holidays can be tough on relationships, we know this at PartyPoker, and we know that in the best of times relationships can be hard, really trust us we know. It’s okay though, it’s not your fault Will.
One such relationship which has had it’s up’s and downs over the past few years in that of father and son duo Tony G and John Eames. Here they talk about his mother, how she’s moved on and if John needs to visit a psychologist. It’s heart touching stuff which is what we all need a little does of come Christmas time right?

Tony G – My Thoughts on the PartyPoker.com Challenge for MUTV

I have been to Manchester United to take part in the PartyPoker.com Challenge for MUTV with a group of current players. My role was to be a guiding hand for the day and give these fine athletes lessons in playing poker. I’m sure they felt they were in good company considering I am an Olympian!
When I first heard about this I thought great – let’s get in this game and take everything they have and give it to charity. I want to play and raise the stakes – Teddy Sheringham is the best poker playing footballer either ex or current and he ‘nitted’ it up at the WSOP Main Event this year to cash. He may be a tactically adept but he went a little robot? They can learn from Tony G!
The Scouting Reports
I played with these guys but not actually in the charity event itself where I was in the commentary with goalkeeper Anders Lindergaard. Is this Dane an aggressive Scandi? Here are my scouting reports on the players involved I gave them before they played..
Jonny Evans – you are not a rock Jonny – play it hard from the back. No need for slow play from you and keep the fluent passing. Use that Northern Irish steel of yours, it will be needed.
Phil Jones – I will teach you how to be the table captain. Get this right and you can use the flair you have to play in different positions. Poker is about versatility and you have that abounds.
Rafael da Silva – You have pace and potential at the table. There are no brothers at the poker table Rafa. Let me help you polish the finest ways to bring in da Silva in poker. Actually, forget Silva, it should be gold!
Tom Cleverley – To play poker cleverly is half the battle. Whatever you do, do not overplay King-Jack – that is not clever at all.
Darren Fletcher – You need a big engine, heart commitment and experience to push your chips over the line and you have this in abundance.
Danny Welbeck – Quick thinking, deft touch and positional sense. When you sense weakness in poker you just pounce! I hope you don’t wear headphones, poker should be about engagement.
The Video
Congratulations to eventual winner Jonny Evans. Keep an eye here on the PartyPoker Blog for more exclusive videos from the PartyPoker Challenge.

Greetings from Tony Resort. I’ve been in the Tony G room there smoking cigars and drinking vintage port. I head for WPT Copenhagen next week where I will be taking part in the Main Event and televised cash game. As part of my thorough preparation I have been answering your questions on twitter #asktony @PartyPoker and take Viking baths to prepare me for slaying the Danes.
Clean-Freaks
We know from the accounts of the Anglo-Saxons that the Danish Vikings who settled in England were considered to be ‘clean-freaks’, because they would bath once a week. This was at a time when an Anglo-Saxon would only bath once or twice a year. In fact the original meaning of Scandinavian words for Saturday (laurdag / lørdag / lördag) was ‘Washing Day’ – every day is a washing day for me. Bring on the herbs – the juniper, and finish yourself off with a sauna. I have the official Lithuanian basketball masseuse come to Tony Resort every week and hit me with birch tree sticks. He’s over 80-years-old and gets so hot in the sauna that he jumps into an ice cold lake from time to time to cool himself down. He then goes for a run in the forest. He has been training me and I am focused and ready for Denmark. I need to win a big WPT and I need to take everything they have in the cash game.
Come and get me Holger!
While indulging in Viking cleaning habits I have been looking at the legend that is ‘Holger the Dane.’ Some say he is a legendary Viking character from the 12th century and at the end of his days he retired to a secluded keep at Kronborg Castle at Helsingør to enter a twilight sleep from which he will awake in the hour of his country’s need. It is Denmark’s time of need next week – they really, really need him now once I invade! Come and get me Holger!
Danes have a sense of humour
I have always loved the Danes – they have a sense of humour. I think they’ll need this even more once I have finished with them. Since they turned into a regulated market they really only play their own kind so I have an edge. In fact I am the only non Dane invited into the Danske Spil Cash game on Friday 16th November so I am absolutely loving it. After my exploits in Minsk and King’s Casino though I am a little worried the games will not be big enough.
Wire In Everything You Have
We’ll start eight handed and I will join Alex KP, Jannick Wrang, Peter Jepsen, Jesper Hougaard and Simon Raavnsbaek. I don’t particularly fear anyone. Where is Theo Jorgensen and ‘The Great Dane?’ I guess they are far too scared! Perhaps they have had a read of #asktony and learned what my biggest win and biggest loss is in a single day? My message to everybody is to wire in everything you have – you want to make it big, I want to make it bigger! The Accelerator is only just at PartyPoker.com this month, my foot is flat on the floor on it for cash game action! It will be streamed on pokernyhederne.com and eb.dk
Wire In Everything You Have
WPT Copenhagen marks the start of my winter wind down and build up to Aussie Millions – soon I will be off to Bali to relax and concentrate on body and mind. While I do that I will be sending my eight month old German Shepherd puppy Nordas to a private dog university. He is going training with his sister but he follows in famous footsteps with this education. Zasko came top of the class in swimming but is now running wild so I will be hoping for better results for Nordas. Nordas is a warrior and much stronger than Holger the Dane!

350k and rolling
I have 350k at the start of the day and crushed Juha Helppi with the last hand of the night last night. I have also staked a talented youngster in the game Kristijonas Andrulis – Lithuania’s top player in my mind and put the PartyPoker.com badge on him. Mad Marvin is in too – may the force be with us all!

‘True athletic prowess’ of Tony G and Phil Hellmuth
There’s a lot of talk in the UK at the moment about a politician who ranted because they wouldn’t let him ride his bike out of Number 10 Downing Street. The media have responded with the following headline but are you sure this isn’t the headline marking the end of my triathlon with Phil Hellmuth at WPT Malta?
I biked him in the basketball (he can dodge baskets baby!) and running, while he sent me on mine in the swimming (that’s what happens when you are attached to the backside of Michael Phelps). If you haven’t seen the videos yet catch up on the true athletic prowess of us both! Big thanks must go to Jesse May for adjudicating and Andras Fekete, a Hungarian Hellmuth troll of true character and my PA for the week. He is proof that Phil Hellmuth did ride a hot dog! I packed Hellmuth off to Cannes with the hot dog and spiderman suit – let’s hope we see them again!
All in all I can say that spending a week in the company of the brat wasn’t all that bad. He talked about talking to ‘Condi’ (Condoleezza Rice) and debated the merits of the G5 private jet way too much but he’s alright in small doses and clearly doesn’t have the bankroll to play in the super high roller games. He clearly doesn’t forgive me for a perceived ‘angle shoot’ on the Big Game in the States but I do forgive myself for sending him on his bike there and in the triathlon. This time he also didn’t decide to wear his ipod in a nightclub so progress is being made with his mental health.
I finished 10th at WPT Malta and was bitterly disappointed not to have made the final table – I had to smoke multiple shishas after that exit.
Next up? I am weighing up going to Cannes for WSOPE (will Robl be there with headphones on?) and I have been on a yacht off Croatia. I am also spending plenty of time on my new project – Lithuanian Rowing (nice gold medal at World Rowing Championship last week). I have committed myself to WPT Copenhagen too.
Then of course there is Tony’s House – thousands of you are raiding my house with the online grand final on October 7th. I intend to fight to the death that day to stop all these looters and if it is on Fast Forward tables then so be it as I hate nits. You can take my tvs, my ipads…even my Volkswagen – but you will never take my FREEDOM!

Tony G: Back to playing poker
![]()
I am back to playing poker for the rest of the year. First up I will be representing PartyPoker at the WPT Grand Prix de Paris from September 10th – 15th. I haven’t been to the Aviation Club for a while now – the last time I went was in February 2011 for the National Series event.
All I can say is Bruno Fitoussi get your finest cognac ready – I also hope that waiter who is qualified and got a big tip from me last time out is still there. This weekend marks the last chance to qualify for WPT Paris – do it now, think of all those poor players!
Tony G: My Team USA
Everywhere I go in East London I seem to bump into Greeks who want to take me on – I politely decline as I am continuing to have the time of life with Lithuania’s men’s basketball team.
We saw off Nigeria, we have France tomorrow and then the USA on Saturday. Look out for me on Saturday as I will be on the bench. Hellmuth – will you be there? If you want to come drop me a line, I will see what I can do?
We are massive underdogs for the USA game but we have the fighting spirit of Ruta. It’s hard to keep up with the kids isn’t it Phil?
Who would I choose for Team USA…
This all got me thinking. Who would be in Team USA on the green baize? My five person team would be Phil Ivey, Vanessa Selbst, Tiffany Michelle, Evander Holyfield and Michael Phelps. There we go, there is my selection – there is no room for people I cannot see when I am on the march with my national flag.
France will be a difficult game for my boys. There is no doubt that their basketball players are much better than their poker players. Russia are also historically very good and a force now – again much better than any Ralph Perry’s I may meet – I am so proud that they are aiming for 5th place – Lithuania are going for gold!
There is one cloud on the horizon. I bumped into Usain Bolt and he didn’t seem to remember that I challenged him heads-up in London a couple of years back. Before I could open my mouth he was gone, gone, gone!
Tony G: Greetings from the Olympic Village at London 2012
Greetings from the Olympic Village at London 2012! A lot of you have been asking who I am looking at in this picture as I walk with Lithuania’s flag bearer – the legendary Olympic discus champion Virgilijus Alekna. I was trying to see if I could see Phil Hellmuth in the crowd. I know he’s around as a cheerleader for the human dolphin Michael Phelps but he’s not in the village. Probably wise, don’t need a village idiot!
Managing a team against all the NBA superstars
Last night, Lithuania’s men’s basketball team played their first game – we lost but I feel really good about the next four games. We have Nigeria tomorrow, who we should beat while a match against the USA is also coming up later this week. People always ask me about what it might be like managing a team against all the NBA superstars from the States and I say I genuinely believe there could be a massive upset here. The Lithuanians are not scared – I can see us avenging our defeat against Argentina in the semi-finals – we beat them before in a sudden death game in Turkey earlier this year.
Life in the village is great, it seems like lots of people have recognised me as when they see me they ask if poker has become an Olympic sport. Inside the village it is like communism, everything is free and it is like being on a different planet. I am so glad I have done this – I am blessed to have been given the opportunity to get involved with something as big as this. I have been involved with Lithuanian basketball for two years and once this is over it is back to my normal life, it is back to playing a lot of poker for the rest of 2012. Whatever the result for Lithuania it is about the Olympic spirit of competing.
What is poker like in the Olympic Village?
I got the opportunity to have breakfast this morning with Ruta Meilutyte, the 15-year-old Lithuanian swimming superstar of the future who has got so many headlines in the past couple of days. Under the watchful eye of her UK based coach Jonathan Rudd she has shown herself to be a real fight with outstanding talent. Her mother died when she was very young and after she broke the European record at the weekend I expect her to finish top five in the final. She makes me proud to be Lithuanian.
A lot of you have asked about what the poker is like in the Olympic Village. All I will say is the US and Greeks love to play and that the Lithuanian men’s basketball team do too (they might also have someone to back them J). Depending on results I will go to Cyprus later this week – all inclusive resort, Russian cash game players to eat – what paradise!
I also got great news from Lithuania while I have been away with the basketball team. Zasko is a daddy and his three month old son Nordas is doing very well – a potential king of the forest no doubt he is surging and stalking, just like his father and his father’s owner!
